As many of you already know, earlier this week I was bouncing back and forth between feeling resentment and then feeling guilt and then back to resentment and so on. This morning I spoke with my counsellor about how awful that felt and how emotionally drained it made me feel. Talking with him made me realise that my initial feelings were perfectly normal and also that rather than attaching other emotions to my initial emotion and then bouncing back and forth as if in a tennis match, that I need to accept the initial feelings and basically work through them or the next time it happens I’ll find myself replaying the tennis match again.
This may resonate with some of you and some may be thinking “I don’t need counselling for that”, but I’d highly recommend counselling to all unpaid carers as it really does help to have that one person who will listen to what you have to say and then work with you to find ways of breaking the cycle or changing the direction of your minds thinking.
